A lot has been said of the electric car, but in the more recent future, what are the most credible alternatives?

Water has recently surfaced as a promising alternative to fuel. But I'm not sure I like the idea of using our most precious element to fuel two-billion cars around the world. We really don't know what indirect effects will be produced. Will the planet run dry in a decade? Will we finally trigger the water wars I've long been hearing about.
When I hear about new technologies such as this, I can't help thinking about the corn based ethanol boom in the US, a few years ago. When US government started promoting corn-based ethanol as an alternative fuel, food prices skyrocketed around the world. Developing countries and the poor in developed nations really paid the price for our "green solution."
I don't want to say that all ethanol is a bad. For decades, Brazil has been successfully using sugar based ethanol with great success, and with no obvious repercussions. I just want to suggest people involved in the green movement think critically about new technologies. Especially technologies that use something as important as water.
